The end of the year always marks the start of the festive season, during which people break for the holidays, spend time with family, and engage in the joy of gift-giving. For many in South Africa, this season is often the start of a very bleak period, as dispirited people from impoverished backgrounds cannot enjoy the festive season in the same manner.
To address this issue, The Motsepe Foundation launched the Christmas with Our People toy distribution and concerts, where it can spread the spirit of Christmas and give back to communities in need of some merriment as the year comes to a close.
Through the toy distribution initiative, the Motsepe Foundation distributes over 200 000 toys a year to children in several municipalities. Trucks, dolls, soccer balls and the like, are given to children of all ages.
Simultaneously, the Motsepe Foundation hosts concerts where around 217000 people are entertained, free of charge, by well-known and emerging local artists. Every year, the concerts are held in 5 provinces, attracting an ever-growing number of locals all seeking to engage in the Christmas cheer.
This year, artists such as AKA, Ricky Rick, Thembi (the concert MC) and Mafikizolo will perform, all sharing a stage with upcoming and aspiring artists from their respective provinces.
The first concert commenced on a successful note along the beachfront in East London, brimming with some 30 000 concertgoers.
The Motsepe Foundation continues to engage with communities across the country to better understand their needs and search for solutions to address them. Whether through concerts, toy distribution, scholarships and donations, the Motsepe Foundation aims to uplift the people of South Africa, towards its ultimate mission to build a brighter future for all.
