The Motsepe Foundation paid a visit to Buffalo City Metro in East London early this year. The Motsepe Foundation chairman, Patrice Motsepe, formally handed over equipment bought with a R1 million donation towards 57 amateur and professional boxing clubs in the region.
Key attendees at the formal handing over ceremony were Alfred Mtsi, the mayor of Buffalo City Metro, and the provincial sports MEC, Penny Majodina.
Among the boxing stakeholders who benefitted from the donation was Nomonde Tete, the mother of boxing siblings Makazole and Zolani, who received funds for a prosthetic leg she needed. Initially the donation was meant to go towards the Tete family, but after seeing the number of boxing world champions that hailed from Buffalo City Metro, Mr Motsepe was inspired to extend his donation to the wider community.
The chairman believes that boxing should be encouraged in schools as a sport, so as to allow schools to benefit from the sports programmes that the Motsepe Foundation has initiated with the Department of Education.
