Social Entrepreneurism

Our goal is to expose gifted African students and entrepreneurs to global institutions of learning.

Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) sponsorship towards social entrepreneurship: The Motsepe Foundation has committed funding to the HKS towards African students who wish to improve their knowledge on social entrepreneurship, in particular, systems entrepreneurship.

The Motsepe Foundation partnered with the SCHWAB Foundation based in Geneva, Switzerland in 2015, in order to promote social entrepreneurship on the continent. The Schwab Foundation is a non-profit organisation with a purpose to advance social entrepreneurship and foster social entrepreneurs as an important catalyst for societal innovation and progress. Every year, the Schwab Foundation, in partnership with the Motsepe Foundation, host a Social Entrepreneur of the Year Awards (SEOY) to raise the awareness of African social entrepreneurs and advance their agenda.

The organisations receive thousands of nominations from different entrepreneurs around the world for consideration and the Motsepe Foundation calls for nominations within its network. The partnership awards the best social entrepreneurs and exposes them to a pool of possible partners through the Schwab Foundation’s associations with the World Economic Forum (WEF). The partnership has also produced a body of knowledge on the best practices for social entrepreneurs, as well as provide systems and partnerships (link to research finding at Bertha centre for social innovation and Entrepreneurship UCT.

The Motsepe Foundation also supports the Shwarzman Foundation in taking African students to study in China. A total of $2.5 million is committed every 2 years, starting from 2014 to 2018.
